Just before he left office, the defeated former President Trump issued a rushed permit for a massive new oil and gas drilling project in the Arctic. The so called “willow” drilling project would be a disaster for local communities already over-burdened with pollution and extraction, and for our collective climate. Willow project alone would produce enough global warming pollution to make President Biden’s plan to reduce global warming pollution 50% by 2035 impossible.
Fortunately, a federal judge threw out the previous administration’s hasty and illegal permits, and right now the Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comments on the Environmental Impact of the project!
In solidarity with the Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic (SILA) and our partners at Build Back Fossil Free, will you submit a public comment to the BLM to stop this arctic drilling disaster?
This is a critical test of Biden’s commitment to climate action. Research from UN scientists at the IPCC and others made clear in the last few weeks that building clean energy isn’t enough on its own to stop climate chaos. We also need to end the era of fossil fuels, and specifically we need to stop new drilling projects that will lock in fossil fuel dependance and pollution for decades to come.
Analysis shows that Willow alone would make it impossible for the Biden Administration to meet its goal of getting the US to zero-net emissions by 2050. And the courts have made it clear that Biden has authority, and in fact the obligation, to stop the project. Everyone’s voice matters right now in convincing him to do so.
Submit a public comment and share with your networks TODAY, The deadline is March 9th.
