Tell Big Brands to Drop Dirty Citi!

Citi has co-branded credit cards with big brands like Costco, LL Bean, Macy’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, Sears, and AT&T. Last week we asked you to sign a petition to those companies and to identify whose cards you had in your wallet. This week, we’re delivering the message to tell Citi’s most important clients to find a better bank.

Citibank has been the world’s largest funder of new fossil fuel expansion since 2015 when the Paris climate agreement was signed. The fossil fuel industry is polluting our planet and our communities, disproportionately harming low-income communities of color.

Show up to help us deliver the message to Citi’s 7 biggest customer companies in three simple steps! Can’t take action this week? Chip in to support the tools and organizing so that others can.

  1. First, if you haven’t already, sign the petition to these brands and companies.
  2. Next, send a quick email to the CEOs and senior executives of these companies telling them to drop dirty Citi.
  3. Last, use this toolkit to find a local retail outlet and deliver the signatures from step one in-person.

We’ve all seen how climate change is causing more and more-extreme weather events all around the world and here at home. In Saudi Arabia, at least 1,300 people died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage as temperatures reached at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit. More than 11,300 people died this year in Libya due to unprecedented flooding when historic rains caused a dam to burst. Just this month we’ve seen extreme flooding and a rare superstorm in the Southeastern US; Fires burn iconic parks and resorts in the Pacific Northwest and Canada to cinders; And record setting heatwaves at the poles and melting glaciers.

Climate change is caused by fossil fuels. And fossil fuels are funded by big banks and investors. Citibank has been the world’s largest funder of new fossil fuel expansion since 2015 when the Paris climate agreement was signed.

We’ve been a part of the Summer of Heat campaign all year. Since June families, grandparents, scientists, young people, and people of all ages and backgrounds have been calling out the financiers of the climate crisis like Citibank. As of today, more than 430 people have been arrested at non-violent protests in New York to demand a just transition and an end to financing fossil fuel expansion.

Now we’re expanding the campaign beyond New York by targeting the big brands that partner with Citi. Brands like Costco, LL Bean, Macy’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, Sears, and AT&T. It’s time for us to hit Citi where it hurts: Their brand reputation and their ability to do business with other major companies. If we put pressure on these companies to reject Citi over its fossil fuel financing – we can really make a difference.

If you’re new to the campaign, start with something simple: Sign this petition, urging every company that has a co-branded credit card with Citi to drop Citi and find a better banking partner. Then, click here to write a personalized email to the top executives at Citi’s biggest customer companies. Tell them that if they care about climate change and sustainability, they MUST drop Citibank. After you send your letter, we’ll direct you right back to this blog post so you can print out petitions and deliver them in person, or chip in to support the tools and organizing so that others can.

  4. Banks & Big Retail Outlets along with Hedge Funds, Silicon Valley Billionaires have a vision that is closed to what is right for the people and the planet. Their only vision is how to fill their pockets. Even the billions of those little plastic cards are a threat to the quality of our planet & our health. Our voices should be louder than their money.

  5. We need to save our planet unless you are aware of another one we can live in that is less polluted. And if so, do you have a plan on how to get all of your customers, investors and employees there safely?
I thought not! So how about trying to save our Earth by demanding that all oil producing companies stop their pollution by not funding these corporate giants with our investor dollars. And, if you are not able to make such important and large decisions, we can easily find more companies in which to invest our money that do not agree with destroying our favourite planet: EARTH!
Thank you, in advance, for your making a wiser choice!
